Frequently Asked Questions

This is the official name for a property and casualty insurance policy that covers damage affecting the physical fuselage of an aircraft.

The insurance coverage limit considers the costs of body damage as well as the labor required to repair the vehicle. In some (but not all) cases, fuselage insurance will also cover equipment not attached to the vehicle, such as onboard navigation instruments.

This does not cover bodily injuries to passengers or third-party damage caused by the aircraft being steered, as these losses are covered by liability insurance.

Liability limitation claims typically range from $5 million to $100 million or higher, depending on exposure. Unowned aircraft liability insurance provides coverage when a company becomes legally liable for bodily injury (including passengers) and property damage to third parties due to a loss caused by a company or employee’s use of an aircraft that does not belong to them. Liability coverage will be provided to the company unless the aircraft is partially or wholly owned or registered on behalf of the company, its subsidiaries or related parties.

Damage policies generally do not cover any elements or malicious acts that fall below the downloadable/extreme level. Malicious acts can include anything done deliberately to damage aircraft, from the suicide of a pilot to employee sabotage. Insurers considered shooting down an aircraft (even if not intentionally) as an act of malicious intent. A separate war policy is usually required to cover these.
